Imports and cargo volumes at the Port of Los Angeles rose in March 2025 as frontloading and tariff issues clouded the outlook for trade, especially in the second half of the year. The port, the busiest container gateway in the United States, handled 778,406 twenty-foot equivalent units in March, up 4.7% from the same period in 2024.
The strong performance in March contributed to the overall performance in the first quarter. In the first quarter, the Port of Los Angeles handled a total of 2,504,049 TEUs, up 5.2% from the same period last year, and trade volumes remained strong in the first quarter, with year-on-year growth in 18 of the past 20 months.
Stakeholders are optimistic about the start of the second quarter, expecting increased trade activity as importers prepare for the spring and summer fashion season and back-to-school shopping season.
