According to the American Railroad Association, as of the week of March 8, overall rail transport activity in the United States increased significantly compared with the same period in 2024, although intermodal transport volume has continued to slow down this year. The total US transport volume reached 497,412 trucks and intermodal units that week, a year-on-year increase of 5.4%, thanks to the increase in trucks and intermodal transport. Among them, the transport volume of complete vehicles was 219,457, a year-on-year increase of 2.6%; the intermodal volume was 277,955 containers and trailers, a year-on-year increase of 7.7%, but a decrease of 0.5% from the previous week.
In terms of commodity transportation, the volume of coal, grain and miscellaneous truck transportation increased, increasing by 2,815 cars, 2,414 cars and 1,114 cars to 57,977 cars, 21,710 cars and 8,897 cars respectively; the volume of metal ores and metals, chemicals and forest products decreased, decreasing by 868 cars, 675 cars and 171 cars to 17,939 cars, 33,079 cars and 8,188 cars respectively.
The cumulative transportation volume in the first 10 weeks of 2025 was mixed. The total freight volume was 2,088,739 cars, down 1.5% year-on-year; the intermodal units were 2,714,285 cars, up 8.4% year-on-year; the total freight volume was 4,803,024 cars and intermodal units, up 3.8% year-on-year.
The report also analyzed North American railway transportation volume (including data from nine railways in the United States, Canada and Mexico). Total freight carloads increased 2% year-over-year to 326,395 cars in the week ending March 8, and the number of intermodal units increased 5.5% to 359,817. The total number of weekly freight cars and intermodal vehicles was 686,212, an increase of 3.8%. In the first 10 weeks of 2025, North American railroads transported 6,574,589 cars and intermodal units, an increase of 2.3% from 2024.
