According to the latest data from the American Association of Railroads (AAR), in the week ending February 15, U.S. rail freight volume increased by 1.5% year-on-year, reaching a total of 480,740 trains and intermodal units. Among them, truck loads fell 4.8% to 209,216 cars, while intermodal volume increased 7% to 271,524 containers and trailers. Among the 10 commodity categories monitored by AAR, petroleum and petroleum products increased by 15.9%, while categories such as coal, metal ores and metals, and chemicals all declined.
Canadian railway truck loads fell 6.3% this week, and intermodal volume fell 7.1%; Mexican railway truck loads fell 17.3%, and intermodal volume fell 7.1%.
In the first seven weeks of 2025, U.S. rail freight volume increased by 4.7% year-on-year; Canadian rail freight volume increased by 2%; Mexican rail freight volume decreased by 8.5%.
